“State of the Club” address:
Bill Garlow gave a brief history of the development of soccer in the
Salina area. He also took an inventory of how the people present
learned of this meeting. The information was received by the Club
newsletter, the Email information sent to the coaches by Jane Bradbury
and from the SSC website. Bill also gave a brief summary of where
the money goes that the SSC receives from registration.
Reports:
Treasurer:
See Attached.
Registrar:
The Club issued 161 new cards this season. 5 new teams were
formed. This was attributed to the smaller team and field
size. 5 more teams are expected in the spring.
Directors of Coaching:
Todd Smith covered the coach’s clinics coordinated by the Club.
12 people attended the E clinic that was taught by KYSA. He
covered the D license clinic and coached clinics for the Y. Next
season there will be another E clinic for all coaches that are
interested.
Mike Dibbini said that open gym will continue at Lakewood on
Sunday, Mondays and Fridays. Currently Sunday is booked. On
Oct. 6 he will be providing game analysis to players and coaches at the
KWU game.
Public Relations:
Bill Garlow reported for Dave Ouderkirk. SSC is hosting a
night at the South vs. Central soccer game on Sept. 30. There
will also be a SSC night at the KWU game on Oct. 6. There was a
reminder that on Oct 16 the US Women’s team would be playing before the
Wizards game.
Field Complex:
Paula Knox gave an update on the current city field situation.
The new fields at Bill Burke have been developed and seeded and will be
ready for play in the fall of 2005.
The new complex will be at the South Ohio and Schilling location.
The City Commissioners have approved the use of $750,000 in funds for
the sales tax dollars. This is to be matched by funds raised by
the SSC to make available 1.5 million dollars that are needed for Phase
I. Phase I will provide 5 new fields and parking at the
Complex. The SSC needs to raise $150,000 to be at the required
$750,000 in matching funds. Negotiations are proceeding with the
airplane club that has facilities on the site. The city is
offering to help this organization rebuild at a new location. The
question was raised about the impact of the Salina schools and their
efforts to bring in turf at the stadium. Paula stated that the
turf will be nice for game play, but that this certainly does not
answer the city wide need for more practice fields and fields needed to
create a local league.
Scholarship:
Jack Lennon was absent and Bill Garlow reported for him. Jack has
researched other clubs that have established scholarship money.
Everyone agrees that it is important to meet the financial needs of all
the children in our community. The SSC scholarship fund currently
has some seed money available and Jack has developed an application
process. Jack also has several fundraising ideas available to
teams to help offset the costs for uniforms, tournaments, and travel.
New Business
Dr. Kevin Norris gave a presentation on nutrition for athletes.
He handed out two papers on “Eating to Play” and “Nutrition”.
Bengston and Royal Tires are offering a promotion of a free soccer
ball.
All that is needed is to present a completed form at their stores.
Volunteers are always needed for ongoing committees to help further
develop the SSC. The current needs are for the complex
fundraising, tryouts and team placement, college placement, and player
development.
Jeanette discussed the operation of the SSC phone line and that if one
of her children answers the phone please ask them to hang up and please
call back and leave a message.
Jarrod announced that KWU will be having their alumni game on Oct
2. This will be an opportunity to see current and old coaches
play soccer again.
Bill reminded everyone that KWU is looking for families to adopt soccer
players that are here from out of town.
Bill thanked Jane for all of the work she has done to improve the
communications between SSC and the community.
Meeting was adjourned.
